My 10 Museums in 10 Days Project, while conceptually similar to the 10 Dates in 10 Days one, does not have the same intended result... I swear! But if Day One is any indication, it may turn out to be more successful. See, I just went and watched skater boys for lunch.
There's an exhibit at Deitch Projects through the end of the month, "Session in the Bowl" (pix from the Chicago installation), that's gotten a fair amount of press. This pair from Chicago built an indoor skate bowl, all elevated and stuff, so that you can walk all around and underneath. All the reviews I read talked about the incredible craftsmanship, the fluidity of form and function. Not a single one mentioned the boys.
Enough of you know what kind of mood I've been in recently, so you probably won't believe me when I say what I'm going to say, but hear me out. The boys made the exhibit. Not in the "oh cute skater boy" sense (and for the record, that Avril LaVigne song makes me puke) but because of the emotional resonance of a bunch of 20-somethings back in a bowl for the first time in years. It's possible that on weekends or in other locations it's a different demo, but today during lunch hour, in a wistful haze of nostalgia (plus a couple of guts and a lot more fear), a dozen sweaty professionals in faded Vans and untucked shirts just tore it up. Nearly made me cry.
